After 14 1/2 wonderful years, at 16.5 years old, we put Denver down. I adopted him in 1993 when he was 2 years old, a rescue - the people that gave him up said he was the worst dog they ever had - because he barked....so they beat him..
From the moment that Denver entered our lives, he was a joy - the most loyal and loving guy...granted in the beginning he would take his 'walks' around the lake and I would have to pick him up many times at Doggy Jail....but that is the only thing I can remember about him that was disobedient. He would do the "Denver Dance" when we came home, and would talk to us - must like a husky does. He was just happy to be with us.
Almost 5 years ago - Denver began to slow down, so we brought him a best Friend - Christie, our Jack Russel Terrier - what a comical act they were together, and I swear she added another 5 years on his life - that and all the vegetables he ate.....Denver's Favorite food was SALAD - yes....salad....and he just always seemed so grateful that he was with us.
In the last year, Denver really got old - we would joke and call him a fossil, but for 16 years that really is old for a dog. His hips were going, he was pretty deaf, he had cataracts, and started losing his bathroom control - which resulted in me having to clean the carpet on a consist ant basis - but I knew it was just that he could not help it - he was an old man - a grampa.
On November 19th - we sent Denver to where all the good dogs go...over the Rainbow Bridge.....I have read this before but our Friend Ali just sent this to me and I think it is the perfect words of sending your dog from you into the arms of another to care for him.....
"When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER... "
